Psych Site visit reflection

We had our Psych site visits with Dr. Saint Martin who did the meetings via Zoom. We all met online and presented an H&P that we discussed together. Prior to this he sent us a document that stated how he wanted us to write said H&Ps since psych documents are very different and a lot more detailed then regular medicine H&Ps. This was challenging at first, as I didn’t know what was relevant and how much to include, but then realized that in this field, the more detail you put in the better. For the histories of these patients it was also very important to include collateral information, which we would obtain by calling the patient’s family or significant other. This was so we could obtain a richer and fuller history that was not just based on the word of the patient.

We would then present our patient during the site visit and discuss certain differentials and why or why not we should rule something out. The professor would also ask us if we provided the patient with any education and if we would do any form of CBT. This was very helpful as it got us to think about why in certain psych cases, medication or CBT would be needed. It also was interesting to discuss the patient case and get someone else’s opinion on it, so we could see if the plan of action we took was similar to others.

In the Final eval, we were asked to prepare 2 more H&Ps, 1 article based on an H&P and 5 pharm cards. His pharm card requirement’s were a little different in that they included extra information such as an article showing evidence of efficacy, drug forms and doses, ad CYP interaction. This allowed us to get a better understanding of the medication. During this evaluation we also presented out H&Ps and discussed the articles. We were given critique on where we should improve and what we did better. Overall this was a very good learning experience, and allowed us and opportunity to share all the experiences we learned.
