Pediatrics: Site visit summary

For Pediatrics we had our site visit with Professor Maida, but of course due to the current pandemic, this was all done “virtually.” This was actually a lot better experience then I imagined, because we were still able to discuss as we would have in person. This also was a learning experience since we got to virtually interact with our other students, who were in different locations for their pediatric rotation, so it was nice to hear about their experiences.

For our first site visit, we presented 5 of our drug cards, presented an H&P, and did a discussion on a journal article based on one of those H&Ps. The way Prof. Maida did the drug cards was a little different then others, as he would have one of us say the drug, and the other students would have to tell us about their indications, adverse effects, contraindications etc. This was intimidating at first, but was actually a really good learning experience, as we got to challenge ourselves and study the drugs, rather then just read what we wrote. It was also nice to help each other out, and work together. Especially with COVID, and not being able to see our peers, its always such a nice experience when we get to interact with them, even if that is virtually. We also got to discuss our HPs, and our cases, and it was very interesting to see what kinds of patients everyone had. The articles were also nice to hear about, since we got to relate them to our patients case.

The second site visit, we first started with a discussion of how we could better our HPs from the previous visits, and what was missing and what we could do better. It is always helpful to hear criticism, because it tells us where we can improve, and continue to grow, as we are still so new to this field, and there is so much to learn. We then did the drug cards again, which was nice to quiz ourselves and see what we need to review. For example, I need to review adverse effects of common drugs, and the proper pediatric dosing. We then also presented another H&P, but this time, Prof Maida would stop us before we said our differentials, and had the other girls list what they thik could be possible differentials. This was really nice be cause it allowed us to think clinically and partake in each others cases.

Over all, I think the visits were a great learning experience, not only from the Professor, but also from how we could better ourselves, and also from our peers. We also got to share our experiences in the rotation, and talk about what we need to improve, and what we did well.
